Chapter Twelve

I drive back to Ben’s office after leaving Officer Casey. I knock on his door, but this time I let myself in. “Sorry to barge in, but I need your help.”

He looks up from his desk. “Tell me what you need me to do.”

“Is there really a job opening at the dermatologist’s office?”

“I don’t know. I don’t work with them.”

“Can you?”

“Why?”

“Because I need access to their computer system, and I don’t know how else to get it besides working there.”

“Hang on.” Ben stands up and walks over to me, placing his hands on my arms. “You want me to get you a job in a place where you believe a murder weapon was either stolen from or procured by one of the doctors who works there?”

“Yes.”

“Are you crazy?”

“Maybe. Will you do it?”

He lets go of me and runs a hand through his hair. “Hailey, you’re asking me to willingly and knowingly put you in danger.”

“I’ll only be in danger if I get caught.”

“Rinaldi knows your face, and you work for his wife. You can’t pull off anonymity on this one.”

“I’m not going to try to. I’m going to tell Sal Rinaldi that I know about the sale of the pizzeria and I’d rather find a new job than hope Omar Simpson decides to keep me on staff.”

Ben shakes his head. “I still don’t like this.”

“I don’t either, but what choice do I have?”

“You can choose to let Officer Casey handle this.”

“He’s been getting help from several people behind the scenes as it is, including Detective Bilson, and Officer Casey is no closer to solving this case than he was when I first found Dante’s body Saturday morning.”

“It’s only Tuesday, Hailey. These things take time.”

“But we’ve been working on nothing else. We should have some solid leads by now.”

“Even you said there are too many possible suspects.”

“Claus Huber ran out of town. That has to mean something. He works with Sandra Rinaldi’s husband and is secretly in love with Sandra. There’s evidence in that office. I know it. I just need to have access to the office so I can find it and hand it over to the police.”

“Do you promise to let them take over from there?”

It’s not like I have the power to arrest anyone. “Yes.”

“I can’t believe I’m agreeing to this.” Ben walks over to his desk and sits down. “Let me make some phone calls.”

I walk over and kiss his cheek. “Thank you.”

It takes about thirty minutes for Ben to fix up my resume to make it look like I have a lot of experience as an assistant. I’m pretty sure he made up the names of a few companies and their CEOs. I hope this doesn’t jeopardize his reputation or his temp agency.

Then he contacts Sal Rinaldi. He makes the call on speaker so I can hear what’s being said.

“Dr. Rinaldi,” Sal answers once his receptionist patches the call through.

“Dr. Rinaldi, this is Ben Traum with the Traum Temp Agency. I’m sitting here with a client of mine who is in a rather delicate situation.
